A Place of Gathering Since 1676
The Prince Regent has stood on Guildford Street since the reign of King Charles II, opening its doors in 1676, in the heart of the Restoration. Britain was a young maritime power, the Royal Society had been meeting for sixteen years, and Chertsey was a thriving Thames-side market town feeding the capital just twenty miles upriver. We are, by any honest reckoning, the oldest pub in Chertsey, and one of the oldest historic pubs in Surrey still pulling pints today.
Why "The Prince Regent"?
Our name honours George, Prince of Wales, Prince Regent from 1811 to 1820 before he became King George IV. His was the most culturally vivid period in British history: Jane Austen at her writing desk, Beau Brummell at the cut of a coat, Nash's terraces rising in London, the Brighton Pavilion shimmering on the south coast. To call a pub The Prince Regent is to claim a small share of that Georgian flowering, and to keep its spirit of warmth, wit and good company alive on a Surrey high street.

350 Years of Chertsey History
Chertsey itself is older still. Benedictine monks founded Chertsey Abbey in 666 AD; by the medieval period the town was a cornerstone of the Surrey economy. Runnymede, where Magna Carta was sealed in 1215, sits just five miles downstream. Through the Georgian flowering, the Victorian railway boom, two world wars and the long peace since, this pub has been a constant on Guildford Street.
